Fixing Leaky Air Ducts

By HWC Editor

Many people are losing hundreds of dollars every year because of air leakage. Repairing these leaks is not hard. You can begin by sealing all the seams and edges in your ductwork with adhesive backed foil tape. This will stop your heated or cooled air from leaking out and making your home uncomfortable, expensive and wasteful. Start by removing any loose or damaged tape that may already be on your ductwork. Then if your ductwork is in an unheated or uncooled room wrap your ductwork with duct insulation and seal the seams with foil tape. This will help stop your ductwork from leaking air and allow the air to go where it should. Also you should inspect your ductwork and registers for damage and fix or replace them if they are. If your ductwork has just small holes you can patch it with foil tape, but if the damage is more severe it’s time to replace that section. This is a job for an HVAC professional. If your registers are severely dented, don’t operate anymore or are missing pieces they can easily be replaced by a Do It Yourselfer. It’s as simple as gently lifting the old register out and dropping the new one in. Make sure to measure your register or take it with you to make sure you get the proper replacement. Close all registers in unused areas of your home to save yourself some money and stop unnecessary air leakage in unused areas of your home.
